CONTEMPORARY AFFAIRS

The main thrust of the Contemporary Affairs section of the Forum is to increase the awareness of the youth about what is happening in the world around them. It is the fundamental belief of the Forum that the betterment of the youth should have at its foundation a generation of young people who are sensitive to and alert of the issues of the day. The goal is to increase young people’s knowledge about the questions which confront our time and give them a platform to dissect, discuss, debate and deliberate on the matters of today.

We also aim create a network of young people which creates an interface between organisations seeking to provide young people with opportunities and the young people seeking opportunities. The network will also help young people in many other ways, from a Zimbabwean student stranded in South Africa needing help to someone who has a great idea but needs young ambitious partners to venture into business with.

Vision

The idea is to have young people who take an active interest in present day concerns from all around the world and all facets of society, business, arts and science. We seek to promote analytical criticism of current topics and prop up healthy debate on all areas of life. The outcome we anticipate is a youth with an aficionado for subject matter that is up to date and who are able to share that knowledge with younger and older generations as well as to be able to learn from the wisdom of current issues.

Values

Discussion
We want young people to be able to seat down with each other and converse over up and coming innovations as well as sociological advancements and what they mean for the advancement of the world.

Debate
The promotion of healthy debate on contemporary issues is the foundation of what the forum aims to achieve. It is the cornerstone of all programs under Contemporary Affairs. We want deliberations which are couched in the national context and yet capable of global comprehension.

Openness
Our wish is to open up the world to young people and to ensure that they are aware of the problems of the world and they can apply their intellectual skills to start looking at possible solutions. Key to this is removing ignorance and allowing young people to be well versed with as many aspects of society as possible regardless of their academic training and to be able to interact and interchange that knowledge.

Appreciation
The goal is to have young people able to respect each other’s opinions regarding matters which emerge every day. We want to teach young people to listern to each other and to be able to appreciate the thrust of their opposing number’s arguments. The youth should know that it is okay not to agree and they must understand each other’s points of departure.
